| What Do MPs Do? |
| MPs are elected on a first past the post system to represent their constituents at a national level in the House of Commons. Parliament has a maximum duration of five years but a general election can be held at any time. |
| The main functions of Parliament are to: |
| - Examine proposals for new laws |
| - Provide, by voting for taxation, the means of carrying on the work of government |
| - Scrutinise government policy and administration, including proposals for expenditure |
| - Debate the major issues of the day |
| My role is also to be an advocate for my constituents and the constituency at a national level. As your MP I can: |
| - Raise constituency issues in the House of Commons |
| - I can help you on matters for which Parliament or central government are responsible e.g. CSA, benefits, immigration and asylum issues, tax problems, NHS, tax credits. |
| - Listen to your views on national issues |
| Please note that I cannot interfere with decisions made by courts |
| I will do my best to help with any problems you may have. I hold regular advice surgeries in the constituency or you can e-mail me or write to me: |
