What Do MPs Do?

MPs are elected on a first past the post system to represent their constituents at a national level in the House of Commons. Parliament has a maximum duration of five years but a general election can be held at any time.

The main functions of Parliament are to:

- Examine proposals for new laws

- Provide, by voting for taxation, the means of carrying on the work of government

- Scrutinise government policy and administration, including proposals for expenditure

- Debate the major issues of the day

My role is also to be an advocate for my constituents and the constituency at a national level. As your MP I can:

- Raise constituency issues in the House of Commons

- I can help you on matters for which Parliament or central government are responsible e.g. CSA, benefits, immigration and asylum issues, tax problems, NHS, tax credits.

- Listen to your views on national issues
